The restoration of the former 19th‑century gunpowder store on an island in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork, into the Island Crematorium represents a carefully considered approach to adaptive reuse and heritage conservation. The project centred on the sensitive refurbishment of the historic masonry structure, retaining its robust character and spatial qualities while introducing contemporary interventions to support its new civic and ceremonial function. The redeveloped facility accommodates a cremator, a contemplative ritual space, family and refreshment rooms, as well as offices and staff facilities, all integrated in a respectful dialogue between old and new. Extensive hard and soft landscaping works further enhance the site’s setting within Cork Harbour, shaping a peaceful environment for reflection.

 

The design balances preservation with functionality, ensuring the legacy of the industrial past is maintained while meeting the needs of a modern crematorium.
